This fascinating antique horse-drawn buggy plate is a wonderful piece of early rural Canadian history. Lettered "George Nugent, RR5 Hamilton," it offers a glimpse into a time when horse-drawn transportation was an everyday part of life.
I purchased this piece in Hamilton, Ontario, where I was told it was an early license plate used on a horse-drawn buggy. While I cannot verify that history, it is unquestionably an old piece—well over 100 years in age—and its construction, style, and wear certainly suggest it was intended for use on the rear of a buggy or wagon. Whether it served as an identification plate or another form of owner designation, it is an intriguing artifact from a bygone era.
Offered exactly as found, it retains its authentic weathering, patina, and character developed over more than a century. These original signs of age are part of what makes it such an appealing display piece for collectors of primitive antiques and early transportation memorabilia.
Measuring approximately 24 inches long by 10 inches high, it is ready to hang and makes an outstanding addition to a farmhouse, country home, museum display, carriage collection, or antique shop.
An exceptional conversation piece for collectors of horse-drawn vehicle memorabilia, primitive Canadian antiques, and early agricultural history.
