A scarce and highly collectible antique wooden beading plane by Cannadine of London, presented in exceptional condition and measuring 9 1/2 inches in length. This is a beautifully preserved early English molding plane that carries not only the maker’s mark but also the working history of the craftsmen who relied on it.

Planes by Cannadine are associated with early English plane making traditions, most commonly dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, a period when tools were individually crafted for professional cabinetmakers and joiners. London makers of this era were known for producing precise, durable planes from dense beechwood, designed to hold their profiles accurately through years of demanding use. Surviving examples from smaller or lesser-documented makers like Cannadine are increasingly difficult to find, making them especially appealing to collectors who value rarity and early craftsmanship.

This example is further enhanced by multiple owner stamps, including W. Irish and E. Dalton, along with the number 28. These marks represent generations of tradesmen who used this very tool in their daily work, adding a level of authenticity and provenance that cannot be replicated. Multi-stamped planes are particularly desirable, as they tell a story of continued use and preservation across decades, if not centuries.

The beading profile is one of the most classic and widely used decorative cuts in traditional woodworking, seen in fine furniture, architectural trim, and panel work. A well-preserved beading plane such as this is not only a display-worthy collectible but remains fully functional for producing crisp, period-correct detail in a modern shop.

Condition is where this piece truly stands out. The body remains clean and well-formed, with strong edges and clear, legible stamps throughout. Examples of this age and quality, especially with multiple ownership marks and a well-preserved profile, are becoming increasingly scarce as they are absorbed into established collections.

This is a genuine early English woodworking tool that offers both historical significance and practical usability, making it an excellent addition for the serious collector or traditional craftsman.
